This year was the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Every year, Norfolk has an even known as Harborfest (boats, food, entertainment). This year along with Harborfest was OpSail, part of a multi-city even of tall ships, sailing around. Anyway, the tall ships came into port the weekend of June 8th, one of them was the CGC Eagle, which Joel spent 6 weeks on as a cadet. So after Little Gym, we headed to Portsmouth to take the ferry across the river to Waterside in Norfolk. Logan was excited to ride on a boat. This happened to be one of the first really warm days we had; not miserable but not great. There were boats everywhere! Personal yachts (huge ones!!) sail boats, small boats, the tall ships, military boats...lots of boats. There was carnival food and entertainment all over. We were there really just to see the Eagle. We got a top side tour (had we gone earlier, we could have gone on the CG VIP tour, since we or CG), which was nice to see where Joel did some training, and Logan enjoyed climbing around. There were several other tall ships, but the lines were long, and I didn't think Logan would go for the wait. So we walked around and just checked everything out.
Later that evening, Logan and I went to the naval hospital in Portsmouth to watch the fireworks for OpSail. The naval hospital is right on the water, and they have a nice beach area and grassy area that over looks the river. I met a friend there, and we watched an awesome fireworks show. Apparently these are the biggest and best all year, and I could see why. Sadly my camera battery died at the beginning. I wanted to try my new tripod and remote. Logan loved the show; his favorite was the smiley face they made with the fireworks, and some other shapes. Now every time we see fireworks he wants so see the smiley face.
