Germany Day 4

Well, sort of Germany. Stephanie was off today, so we decided to go to Strasbourg, France. Originally in Germany, the city became part of France after WWII. So, Logan and I piled in the VW with Steph and Lindsey (a friend from the states back-packing through Europe), and we headed to France.

The drive through the country was beautiful! I am so fascinated by the villages; every thing seems so 'simple'. It was about an hours drive, so Logan napped. We really didn't have specific plans, just walk around and have some lunch. It was a Monday, but also a national holiday, so it wasn't to crowded in the streets. The architecture of the buildings is so different than here. Depending the area, some buildings survived bombings, and others were leveled but rebuild as before.

Our first stop was a church, rather a cathedral. I tell you, Europeans know how to do churches. I know it doesn't matter where you worship, but there is just something so powerful that overtakes you when you walk into this (or those like it) church. Just by the outside architecture I knew the inside would be unbelievable. I was right. Beautiful stained glass, statues, candles, paintings...it was just breathtaking. I love churches like this. I don't know why, but I do. We walked around for a good half hour. I would just stare at a picture or display. I lit a candle for my Pepaw. I said a prayer in the chapel. I could have sat in that church for hours (though Logan would not have approved).

We walked around town just enjoying the beautiful day. Lunchtime found us at a sidewalk cafe- there were tons. Hard part was decided which one. We settled on one because of food prices, which was located in a little square. Several cafes had tables out in the middle, and the different color chairs would tell them apart. Logan of course couldn't wait so started snacking on goldfish. I ordered a 'coca-cola light' (here we call that Diet Coke)that came in a glass bottle served with a glass with 3 ice cubes (they don't really do ice) and we ordered a Flammenkuche to share. Basically, this is a pizza. It is a very thin crust (almost tortilla like) topped with a cream sauce (mix of cream cheese/ sour cream), some cheese, and little bits of ham. It was pretty amazing. Logan enjoyed it too. I followed up my lunch by enjoying a delicious crepe (banana & nutella) from a cafe as we walked a bit more. Of course I shared with Logan, and he ate bout half =)

After window shopping we headed back to Bann. Once Brian got home, we went to dinner at a castle. Yes, a castle. It was 5 minutes from the house. They had a little cafe on the terrace that overlooked the village (you could also watch the planes take of from the AFB). It was so wonderful! Logan and I had bratwurst, which he loved. He also got free ice cream becuase the owner thought he was cute (which he is) and reminded him of his own son. I tried to drink a real beer, but ick, couldn't do it, so I settled for wine.
